To make a basic healing salve, bring about an inch of water to simmer in a saucepan. Set a heat-proof bowl to rest inside the saucepan, ensuring the bottom of the bowl does not touch the water. Place equal parts unrefined coconut oil and raw shea butter into the bowl. Melt slowly, stirring more or less constantly.
Once completely melted, remove from heat and allow to cool enough that you can safely touch the melted mixture. (The mixture should be cooled but not yet be set.) Stir in a few drops of essential oils (a little goes a long way!), depending on your intent for the salve. (See below for ideas.) Pour into clean, glass jars and allow to set up in a cool space or in the refrigerator. Amber-colored glass jars are preferred, as the dark glass tends to protect the properties of the essential oils.
To use, simply apply a small amount of salve to the impacted area as needed.
Some essential oils you can mix into your salve include:
Carrot Seed – for scars, wrinkles
Frankincense – for acne, scars, wrinkles
Geranium – for cuts & bruises
Lavender – for burns
Tea Tree – for acne, cuts
